The Story: It’s What You Do…Not Say!

As I sit writing this last story in the playbook, I just got a text: my CFO and partner of more than 40 years, Sam, is being released from the hospital after coronary bypass surgery. He was lucky. A wearable device alerted him that his heart rate was spiking faster than normal. That led to tests, which revealed a dangerous blockage, a potential “widow-maker.” Thankfully, he caught it in time.

Sam and I have been through everything together: multiple startups, funding rounds, pivots, big exits, and painful failures. We’ve also endured personal losses, parents, spouses, and even children. We’ve worked together so long that we can almost read each other’s thoughts and sometimes argue like family. But what I feel most is gratitude for the relationship and the lessons we’ve shared.

Back in Chapter 1, I said entrepreneurs are the “crazy ones.” We pour ourselves into our vision. We sacrifice weekends, vacations, and sleep to push toward success. But no matter how passionate we are, businesses are still just that, businesses. At the end of life, nobody wishes they’d spent more time at the office. They wish they had spent more time with family, friends, and loved ones.

I once had a great boss who modeled almost everything right. He listened, coached, mentored, and encouraged people to take their PTO. But he didn’t follow his own advice. He was always the first one in, the last one out. And no matter what he said, what people really noticed were his actions. If he worked late, they felt they should too. If he skipped vacations, they felt guilty taking theirs.

That taught me one of the most important leadership truths: people don’t just hear what you say, they watch what you do. As founders, we set the tone not only for execution but for how people treat themselves, their families, and their balance. If we want our teams to stay healthy, focused, and resilient, it starts with us.

Key Takeaway

Your company cannot outgrow your leadership capacity. Scaling isn’t just about systems and teams; it’s about evolving yourself into a healthier, stronger, more strategic leader.
